Warning the Tiger mosquito is in France,
The 6 of October the Regional Health Agency (ARS) Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (Paca) announced a fourth cases of dengue transmitted by the tiger mosquito!
Tiger mosquito is growing very fast on the French territory. He has already settled 18 departments covering PACA, Languedoc-Roussillon, Corsica, Rhone-Alpes, Midi-Pyrenees and Aquitaine regions.
Tiger mosquito called as "Aedes albopictus" is an Asian highly invasive species. Smaller than 1 cent, it is distinguished by its white stripes on the legs and abdomen. Its progression causes sanitary worries because it is vector of serious potential diseases such as Dengue and Chikungunya.
Because of lot of people travel from epidemics destinations (over 150,000 cases reported this year in the West Indies) the risk of transmission increases and its possible that epidemic arrive in France.
Currently there is no vaccine against viruses transmitted by mosquitoes. The only way to protect yourself is to use mosquito repellents.
The arrival of winter reduces potentially the risk of epidemic in France. However if you travel to endemic areas do not forget to take effective protection.
